Council review of affordable housing project delayed
Naperville City Council review of a developer’s proposal to purchase city land to build affordable housing for seniors and adults with intellectual and development disabilities has been postponed until August.
The council was set to discuss and vote on the terms Tuesday night, potentially selecting Wisconsin-based Gorman and Co. as the developer of six acres of city-owned property at 103rd Street and Route 59.
No reason was given for the postponement, but the council had a busy agenda, including discussion of a proposed ban on assault weapon sales in the city. The development proposal is now scheduled for the council’s Aug. 16 meeting.
The proposal calls for Gorman to purchase the land for $100,000 and build an apartment complex in which both seniors and people with intellectual and development disabilities can live independently and affordably. The deal would include a provision under which rent costs remain affordable for 99 years.
Ninety percent of the 60 units would be available to seniors and IDD individuals who have incomes between 31% to 60% of the Area Median Income.
Stuff the Truck event Saturday to help nonprofit effort
Residents can drop off lightly used furniture and household goods from 8:30 a.m. to 1 p.m. Saturday, July 23, at three locations for a Stuff the Truck event.
The effort benefits Humble Design, a nonprofit organization that helps those emerging from homelessness by supplying their homes with daily necessities.
Furniture and goods such as lamps, side tables, rugs, dressers, books and décor will be collected at the event, which will be set up from 8:30 to 9:30 a.m. at 10S150 Wileden Lane in Naperville; 10 to 11 a.m. at 12928 Grande Pines Blvd., Plainfield; and 11:30 a.m. to 1 p.m. at 1448 Sage Drive, Bolingbrook.
Donated goods are sorted and distributed from Humble Design’s warehouse in Chicago.
A previous one-location Stuff the Truck event in May collected enough items to furnish three or four homes, a news release said.
The event is sponsored by the Dan Firks Team of Compass Real Estate in Naperville and the Sam Sharp Team at Guaranteed Rate in Chicago.

Naper Settlement breaks ground on Innovation Gateway
Construction has started on Naper Settlement’s new 5,150-square-foot welcome and education center, with a groundbreaking ceremony held Sunday for museum and city officials, donors and community members.
The Innovation Gateway is designed to be a “front door” to the 13-acre museum campus. It will feature a wall-to-wall digital exhibition space, including a 23-foot-by-10-foot digital wall exhibit for visitors to upload their own stories.
The gateway will help expand Naper Settlement’s content to represent Naperville in the 20th and 21st centuries, officials said. It will also allow the museum to expand current programming, teacher professional development programs, workshops and corporate training.
