A man died in a temporary detention cell at the North Chicago police department over the weekend, according to the Lake County Major Crime Task Force.

Per protocol, the task force has been asked to conduct an independent investigation into the death. It appears that the man’s dialysis port had been removed, and he lost a considerable amount of blood, the task force said Monday

The man, 34, was taken into custody around 10 p.m. Friday by North Chicago police on a warrant for criminal trespass to a motor vehicle. He was also in possession of a controlled substance, police said.

The man complained of feeling ill, police said, and he was taken via ambulance to an area hospital. After he was discharged, he was returned to the police department. At around 5:30 a.m. Saturday, officers conducting a check discovered the man had died.

His identity has not been released by authorities. The Lake County coroner’s office will conduct an autopsy.
