Oak Forest’s Hamrin has success in Baja

Oak Forest’s Harrison Hamrin, who his studying mechanical engineering at the Milwaukee School of Engineering, is also contributing on the school’s SAE Baja team.

At the UW-Stout Backwoods Baja event on Oct. 22, the team finished sixth in the car carry, sixth in the sprint race and seventh in the four-hour endurance race. During the endurance race the team held fourth place out of 31 cars, but settled for seventh place after having to retire from the race early after suffering a mechanical breakdown.

Hamrin is among 19 students, all studying electrical, mechanical or biomedical engineering, that are on the team.

Lockport’s Kap leads fundraiser at Lewis University

Lockport’s Logan Kap helped lead a campaign that resulted in Lewis University students raising more than $2,000 for Advocate Childrens Hospitals.

Since its inception, WLRA has raised over $100,000 in support of the Lewis University Family Assistance Fund at Advocate Childrens Hospitals. The Lewis University Family Assistance Fund provides practical assistance to patient families who may be suffering severe hardship due to an unexpected illness and either social or economic deprivation. The Lewis University Family Assistance Fund is primarily used for cab rides after treatment, clothes upon discharge, bus rides to and from the hospital, medication, flights and hotel rooms.

The fundraiser involved a 24-hour nonstop broadcast of students that take six-hour shifts, while select students were on the air for longer stints. Donation information is at www.wlraradio.com.

Providence Catholic’s Shepherd named All-State Honors Choir

Paige Shepherd, a senior at Providence Catholic High School in New Lenox, was selected All-State Honors Choir as a member of the Alto I section.

This marks the sixth straight year that a Providence student has gone to state.

Shepherd was selected to the District 1 ILMEA Music Festival, which was held in November, along with classmate Hunter Chentnik. Shepherd was also selected last year for the District 1 ILMEA Music Festival.

Moraine Valley professor earns Fellow honor

Debbie Guerrero, Moraine Valley Community College’s program coordinator of sleep technology, has made contributions to the field of sleep for about 30 years. Recently, she was recognized for her work by being named an American Association of Sleep Technologists Fellow.

Guerrero, who also is a professor of respiratory therapy technology, was inducted with five others as a 2022 Fellow in November. The AAST Fellow Program recognizes credentialed individuals who have made significant, sustained contributions to the field of sleep technology.

“I’ve contributed some to our professional organizations, so when I got this honor, I was flattered, honored and surprised,” she said.

Guerrero is a Moraine Valley graduate who worked in respiratory therapy at hospitals and by chance entered the world of sleep technology in the late 1980s. Once she did, she was hooked and passionate.

“I’m fascinated by how sleep plays an important role in health,” she said. “I’m a sleep preacher.”

Students complete Healthcare Business Leadership program

Mokena’s Molly Gavin, New Lenox’s Meghan Schick and Tinley Park’s Samantha Ritter recently completed the Healthcare Business Leadership program in the University of Iowa’s College of Pharmacy.

The leadership program teaches to-be pharmacists how to understand and make effective business decisions regarding teamwork, finance, conflict management, entrepreneurship, and how to leverage health care data to improve outcomes and decision-making.

Western Illinois University fall highest recognition list

Lansing’s Tatiana Ward, art, is a Centennial Honors Scholar.

Lockport’s Thalia Mercado, political science, is the Political Science Departmental Scholar and will graduate with academic distinction, Summa Cum Laude. She is also a Centennial Honors Scholar.

Frankfort’s Hansen performs with Trine University

Frankfort’s Abigail Hansen performed with the Trine University’s Chamber Orchestra and University Choir during its annual Christmas concert on Dec. 4.
