A new exhibit honoring women in the military has opened in Aurora.

The Aurora Grand Army of the Republic Hall and Museum is honoring the long legacy of women in the Armed Forces and Women’s History Month with its newest exhibit called “Hidden Warriors – The History of Women in the Military.”

The exhibit showcases the role of women in the U.S. military from the American Revolution to the present day and highlights the many challenges women have faced and overcome, including discrimination and prejudice, as they served their country, city officials said in a news release.

The exhibit works to bring the military experience of women veterans from Aurora to life through personal stories, photographs and artifacts from Aurora veterans, including the story of United States Marine Cpl. Sara Medina, 23, who was one of six Marines killed in a 2015 crash during humanitarian and relief operations after an earthquake in Nepal.

The exhibit will run through Sept. 30 at the GAR Memorial Hall and Museum, 23 E. Downer Place in downtown Aurora.

The museum is open from noon to 4 p.m. Wednesdays through Fridays and 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. on Saturdays. Admission is free, and donations are welcome, officials said.

The audio-visual presentation will include Little Orphan Annie, Dick Tracy and Superman, event organizers said.

Darnall’s program “Those Were the Days” is featured on WDCB radio on Saturdays from 1 to 5 p.m. He is also the author of Nostalgia Digest magazine.

The St. Charles Public Library is at 1 S. Sixth Ave. in St. Charles.

Geneva to offer free yard waste disposal

Geneva residents will be able to get a head start on their spring yard work with a free collection of yard waste during the last two weeks in March.

The free yard waste disposal is part of the city’s refuse contract with Lakeshore Recycling Systems, city officials said in a press release.

Yard waste bags set out with garbage will be picked up for free – no refuse sticker required – on residents’ regular pickup days during the weeks of March 20 and 27, officials said.

Yard waste should be placed in Kraft brown paper bags and should weigh no more than 50 pounds. Accepted yard waste items include grass clippings, vines, weeds, leaves, plants, pine cones, small branches and garden waste.

Starting with garbage collection on Thursday and Friday, April 6 and 7, a refuse sticker will need to be affixed to each bag as part of the city’s regular yard waste program, which runs through November.

Tree limbs exceeding one inch in diameter should be disposed of as part of the city’s monthly brush pickup that is scheduled to start in April.

More information about Geneva’s refuse and recycling services can be found on the city’s website at www.geneva.il.us.
