A Kenosha man drowned over the weekend in the Chain O’ Lakes after he tried to swim across a channel, the Lake County sheriff’s office said.

Police said the 25-year-old went under the water at about 1 a.m. Sunday as he tried to swim the channel just north of Petite Lake. His identity has not yet been released.

Authorities were called, and they searched for several hours before recovering the man’s body at about 6:30 a.m.

The man was likely intoxicated, police said, and had been drinking at a birthday party. Witnesses told police he returned to a residence in the 25100 block of West Forest Drive near Lake Villa after the party and had jumped, fully clothed, from a pier into the lake.

He was able to swim to shore, and a relative helped him remove his wet clothing and helped him to bed. A short time later, he jumped into the lake and tried to swim across the channel before going under, police said.

The incident remains under investigation by the sheriff’s Marine Unit.
