The Orland Park Village Board voted Monday to approve expansion plans that will add classrooms at three schools in the village.

The schools are operated by Orland Elementary District 135, which recently broke ground at a fifth school, Prairie, for an addition of 7,500 square feet with five classrooms and three offices. The school is at 14200 S. 82nd Ave.

The work will make the schools more spatially flexible to support some of the immediate and long-term needs of the district, officials said. Construction at the five schools is expected to be completed in fall 2024, and the cost is estimated at $17.2 million.

The largest expansion is at High Point Elementary, 14825 West Ave., where an addition of nearly 15,700 square feet is planned.

A gymnasium, three classrooms and two bathrooms are part of that school’s expansion on the east side of the existing 37,000-square-foot school.

At neighboring Orland Junior High, 14855 West Ave., an addition of 2,200 square feet will be built to house a fitness center.

At Centennial School, 14101 Creek Crossing Drive, an addition of 7,900 square feet is planned to accommodate four classrooms.

At Liberty School, 8801 151st St., an additional 5,500 square feet of space is planned to be built, which will house three classrooms, two offices and two restrooms.

The district said although construction will be going on once the school year begins later this summer, the work is not anticipated to affect school activities.
