A 20-year-old man who was shot by an East Chicago police officer early Saturday is alive and undergoing treatment at an area hospital.
His status is contrary to initial reports from the Lake County Sheriff’s Department, which reported that the man had been killed in the shooting in a Monday release. Lake County is investigating the incident since it was an officer-involved shooting.
East Chicago Police responded shortly before 3 a.m. August 5 to a shooting in the 4800 block of Melville Avenue in East Chicago, Sheriff’s spokeswoman Pamela Jones said in an email.
The investigation is ongoing, and no further information was immediately available, Jones said.
