An East Chicago man was arrested after he smashed into two houses and several cars while allegedly driving under the influence of alcohol early Saturday morning.

Officers were called around 3:07 a.m. September 9 to the 4800 block of Indianapolis Boulevard for an SUV that “struck several parked cars and two houses,” the East Chicago Police Department posted to its social media page. Witnesses to the scene identified the driver and held him because he attempted to flee the scene, according to the release.

Officers immediately smelled alcohol on the man, who’d also soiled himself in the accident, the release said. When they asked him for his driver’s license, he told them he didn’t have one but said his ID was in his pocket.

The man, who police identified as Yobany Bailon, reportedly told the officers, “My brother is a cop. Just take me home,” and refused to take both field and breathalyzer tests, the release said. He was then arrested and taken to the East Chicago jail for operating a motor vehicle by an unlicensed driver and operating a vehicle while intoxicated, according to the release.

Bailon, according to court records, was charged in 2009 with operating a motor vehicle without ever having a license, a charge that was dismissed in 2020. He’s also been charged with driving while license or permit was suspended or revoked; and failure to provide vehicle registration certificate, speeding and driving while suspended.
