A Gary teen is charged after allegedly shooting a dad trying to get his son’s stolen bike back, court records show.

Xavier Maypray, 18, was charged Sept. 7 with two counts of battery.

He is currently being held on a $3,000 cash bond. His next court hearing is Sept. 19.

The shooting happened Sept. 5 at a Citgo gas station, 4700 Broadway Ave.

The victim told police the next day that he went looking for the bike after his son called and said someone stole it. Home security footage showed two people going by, with one on a bike. The male on foot jiggles a door handle on a truck, before taking the bike, according to the affidavit.

The victim hopped on a motorcycle to look for it. While he rode past the Citgo station, he saw a bike that looked like his son’s and went to confront the people standing near it.

One kid, in a gray hoodie, said it was his. He then pulled out a gun and shot the victim in the abdomen, before the people there fled, according to court records.

The man tried to chase them, but ended up going home where a co-worker took him to the hospital.

Maypray was selected out of a photo lineup.
