Police are looking for someone who fatally shot a 17-year-old boy Wednesday night in Round Lake, the Lake County Major Crime Task Force said.

The Lake County coroner’s office Thursday identified the youth as Chad Greenenwald of Fox Lake. Greenenwald died from a gunshot wound to the chest, the coroner’s office said.

He was the passenger in a vehicle hit by gunfire at the corner of Midland Drive and Sycamore Drive, the task force said.

Round Lake police received a 911 call at about 8:20 p.m. and traced the call to a gas station at the corner of Cedar Lake Road and Rollins Road in Round Lake Beach.

There, police found the vehicle with apparent gunshot damage, along with the wounded youth, the task force said. Greenenwald was taken to Advocate Condell Medical Center in Libertyville, where he was pronounced dead.

The investigation, police said, showed that the youth and the driver of their vehicle had come to the Round Lake area, likely to meet someone. Someone approached the vehicle on foot, and the shooting occurred shortly thereafter, police said.

The offender fled on foot, and the driver and wounded passenger left in the car, ending up at the gas station.
