Firefighters were unable to save a cat from a fire that seriously damaged an Elgin apartment building Monday night, an Elgin Fire Department report said.
The fire was reported about 7:15 p.m. in the basement unit of a building in 600 block of Villa Street, the report said. Fire crews arrived to find fire and smoke coming from the basement and smoke throughout the two-story structure.
A dog was rescued from the building, but a cat died in the fire, the report said. There were no firefighter or resident injuries.
The blaze was extinguished in about 20 minutes, with extensive damage to the basement unit and smoke and heat damage to the upstairs units. Damage was estimated at about $200,000, the report said.
The fire’s cause is under investigation by the department’s Fire Investigation Team.
