South Elgin’s annual ‘Almost Winter Day’ set for Nov. 18

South Elgin will be hosting its “An Almost Winter Day” outdoor festival from 2 to 5 p.m. Saturday, Nov. 18, in SEBA Park, 151 S. Water St.

The free event will feature s’mores making, cookie decorating, craft projects, balloon animals and letters to Santa, all of which will get replies from the North Pole, according to a news release. There also will be a snowball slingshot, an ice sculptor, a bonfire and a tree decorating contest.

Santa arrives at 2 p.m. and will stay until 4:45 p.m. for people who want to take their own photos with him. The event concludes at 5 p.m. with a holiday tree lighting ceremony in nearby Panton Mill Park, 9 S. Water St.

Take a cider stroll at Elgin’s Hawthorne Hill Nature Center

The Elgin Parks and Recreation Department will be hosting a cider stroll from 2 to 5 p.m. Saturday, Nov. 18, at Hawthorne Hill Nature Center, 28 Brookside Drive.

The event is for adults 21 or older and will feature strolling the center’s trails, a scavenger hunt and eight hard cider tasting stations, a news release said. Tickets are $40, with proceeds going to the Elgin Parks and Recreation Foundation’s youth scholarship fund.

Elgin Public Museum’s holding a 1970s-themed fundraiser

Tickets are on sale for the Elgin Public Museum’s “Tie Dye and Tunes: That ’70s Fundraiser,” which will be held from 6 to 10 p.m. Saturday, Nov. 18, in the Heritage Ballroom at The Edward Schock Centre of Elgin, 100 Symphony Way.

Tickets are $45 per person, $75 per couple and $500 for a table of 10, according to the event’s website.

The event includes dinner, a cash bar and entertainment. Guests are encouraged to dress in 1970s-style clothing.

‘Little Mermaid’ being shown at Rakow Center indoor pool

The live-action Disney movie “The Little Mermaid” will be shown at 6 p.m. Sunday, Nov. 19, at the Rakow Center indoor pool, 665 Barrington Ave., Carpentersville.

Attendees should bring their favorite pool floats to lounge on while watching the movie, according to the Dundee Township Park District’s website.

Cheer cups being sold for downtown beverage crawl

Holiday Cheer cups are on sale for anyone who wants to participate in the beverage crawl being held as part of Small Business Saturday, Nov. 25, in downtown Elgin.

More than 20 businesses will offer drink samples during the event, which will run from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. as part of the Holly Days celebration, according to the Downtown Neighborhood Association of Elgin.

The insulated Yeti mugs cost $25 and give holders access to the beverages available. Some businesses will be offering alcohol or other beverage add-ons for an additional cost.

Applications for the 2024 St. Charles Fine Art Show are now available at www.stcharlesfineartshow.com and must be submitted by Jan. 31, event organizers said.

The 2024 St. Charles Fine Art Show will take place from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. Saturday, May 25, and 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Sunday, May 26, on Riverside Avenue in downtown St. Charles.

The event showcases the original, juried work in a variety of mediums, including clay/ceramics, digital art, drawing/illustration, fiber (non-wearable), jewelry, photography, glass, mixed media, oil painting, watercolor painting, acrylic painting, printmaking, sculpture and wood.

All entries are exhibited and available for sale during the free, outdoor public event, organizers said. Artists are eligible to win cash prizes through artist awards.
