Naperville Senior Task Force offering Silver CPR classes

The Naperville Senior Task Force is offering Silver CPR for seniors to learn lifesaving skills, basic CPR, use of an automatic external defibrillator and how to intervene when someone is choking.

Silver CPR will take place at 10 a.m. and 12:30 p.m. Thursday, Nov. 16, at the A. George and Patricia Pradel Safety Town, 1320 Aurora Ave.

The classes are free and taught by paramedics with the Naperville Fire Department.

Naperville Sunrise Rotary holding a food, book drive Friday

The Naperville Sunrise Rotary will hold a food and book drive from 8 to 10 a.m. Friday, Nov. 10, at Naperville Country Club, 25W570 Chicago Ave.

The drive will benefit West Suburban Community Pantry, which saw a nearly 70% increase in the number of people helped in the last year than the year prior, officials said in a news release.

Community members can drop off shelf-stable holiday foods and books for children, middle-schoolers and teens.

Among the food items being sought are spices, salad dressing, condiments, rice, beans, canned chicken and tuna, and canned fruits and vegetables.

Club volunteers will assist donors in front of the country club. Donations can also be dropped off from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. weekdays at the pantry, 6809 Hobson Valley Drive, Unit 118, Woodridge.

League of Women Voters hosting forums on carbon, crime

The League of Women Voters of Naperville will host two informational forums in November.

The first, “How Big is Your Carbon Shadow,” will take place at 7 p.m. Wednesday, Nov. 8, via Zoom. It will be led by Cathy Clarkin, executive director of Accelerate Climate Solutions and co-chair of the Naperville Environment and Sustainability Task Force.

Clarkin will talk about various ways people can reduce carbon pollutions from their home and lifestyle while saving money and about the carbon shadow and ways to create broader change to address the climate crisis.

The second forum, “Is Crime Up or Down? Get the Real Story,” will take place at 7 p.m. Thursday, Nov. 16, both in person at Cantigny Park Le Jardin, 1S151 Winfield Road, Wheaton, and via Zoom.

DuPage County State’s Attorney Bob Berlin will talk about countywide crime trends as well as the SAFE-T Act.

Healthy Driven half marathon, other race results released

Nearly 2,250 runners recently competed in the 11th annual Healthy Driven Naperville Half Marathon, 10K and 5K races, with Brandon Kamp, 20, of Naperville, winning the half marathon with a time of 1:09:03.

Bolingbrook resident Kristen Heckert, 36, won the female division of the Half Marathon with a time of 1:19:25.

Of the runners, 1,284 ran the Half Marathon, 286 ran the 10K and 679 ran the 5K, organizers said. Many of the runners raised funds for area charitable organizations.

Naperville resident Jared Righter, 37, was the overall winner of the 10K with a time of 34:33 and Naperville resident Laura Reznicek, 39, was the female 10K winner with a time of 40:54.

Finbar Smith, 38, of Naperville, was the overall winner of the 5K with a time of 17:19 and Kathryn Rohr, 13, of Naperville, was the female 5K winner for the second year in a row, with a time of 18:44.
