A masked Cary man accosted two teenage girls before driving away and later killed himself when a police officer tried to stop him, authorities said Wednesday.

The Lake County Coroner’s Office identified the man as 32-year-old Michael Porter.

According to authorities, Porter shot himself in the neck in the parking lot of the Fel-Pro RRR Conservation Area on Crystal Lake Road on Tuesday.

Police said that Porter accosted two teenage girls at about 3:25 p.m. Tuesday in unincorporated Cary.

Porter pulled his car up to where the girls were walking near the intersection of Fox River Road and North Harvest Glen Road, police said. He then exited the vehicle wearing a mask, according to reports. The alarmed girls ran to their homes and alerted their parents.

The brother and father of one of the teens then began driving around the neighborhood in an attempt to find the vehicle. They discovered the car, and they said Porter then blocked the roadway with his car and brandished a firearm at the father and son, police said.

They called 911, which routed their call to the McHenry County Sheriff’s Department. An officer responded and located the vehicle and attempted to pull it over. Porter then drove into the conservation area parking lot, retrieved the gun and shot himself, police said.

He was transported to Good Shepherd Hospital in Barrington where he was pronounced dead.

The incident remains under investigation by police in Lake and McHenry counties.
