Two women were injured, one fatally, in a Thursday morning fire that broke out at a West Town high-rise, fire officials said.

Authorities said that fire crews responded to a fire call at an apartment in the 1100 block of West Erie Street around 8:45 a.m.  An 85-year-old woman was found with fire-related injuries and was pronounced dead at the scene, according to Chicago police.

The woman’s identity hadn’t been released as of Thursday afternoon, according to the Cook County medical examiner’s office. An autopsy is scheduled for Friday.

A second woman, whose age was not immediately released, was transported to Stroger Hospital with minor smoke inhalation, according to Larry Merritt, a spokesperson for the Chicago Fire Department.

More than 100 personnel responded to the blaze, which was confined to one apartment unit and quickly extinguished with hand pumps, Merritt said.

The cause of the fire remained under investigation.
