A blown transformer at U.S. Steel Gary Works Friday caused a loud boom, but company officials said the incident didn’t result in any injuries to employees.

“A transformer at our Gary Works facility had an electrical failure,” according to a company statement. “This activated a system to limit pressure, which created the sound. The system worked properly to prevent tripping of additional breakers. There were no injuries or production issues as a result of the transformer failure.”

The noise could be heard around 5 p.m. on Friday as far away as Valparaiso.
