It was a wet and rainy one this week! In the city, Tuesday night’s downpour led to extensive flooding on the Northwest Side, and in the suburbs, a flood warning was issued for those along the Des Plaines River due to rising river levels.

After robust debate over the Chicago Teachers Union’s planned Civic Day of Action, CPS CEO Macquline King announced that the district will remain open on May 1 but will provide buses for teachers and students who want to attend planned events. And Mayor Brandon Johnson had a win this week: Opponents to the tipped wages ordinance failed to override his veto. But the mayor notched a loss on another front when his top pick for the Chicago Housing Authority was refused a waiver by the federal government to lead the organization. Looking ahead to 2027, the Tribune reported on the candidates running (or considering running) for Chicago mayor and how much they’ve raised since the start of the year.

Across the sea, peace talks between the United States and Iran fizzled out without a resolution to end the war, leading to the U.S. implementing a naval blockade on Iranian ports as leverage. Meanwhile, fighting between Israel and Hezbollah in Lebanon ceased Friday after the two countries agreed to a 10-day truce. In response to the ceasefire in Lebanon, Iran fully reopened the Strait of Hormuz, allowing passage to commercial shipping vessels.

The Chicago Blackhawks’ season came to a close this week. The team finished with a 29-39-14 record, failing for a sixth straight year to make a playoff run. Plus, yet another Cubs pitcher is headed to the injured list, the Sky introduced the new players they picked up in free agency and the Bulls’ head coach is mulling his future with the team.
