SOLSTICE CENTURY BIKE RIDE AT WHALON LAKE

The third annual Solstice Century Bike Ride will be held Friday, June 19, at Whalon Lake Forest Preserve in Naperville to benefit nonprofits focusing on mental health, youth programs and essential services.

As part of the all-day event that starts at 6 a.m., 100 bicyclists are challenged to complete 10, 10-mile loops through the forest preserve to raise money for area charities. The event also includes a provided lunch and the Solstice Century Celebration, with dinner and music.

Last year, the 100-mile cycling event raised more than $105,000. Organizer Zac Larson, of Naperville, has set a goal to raise $100,000 this year as well, a news release said.

Participants are asked to raise at least $1,000 for charity.

The nonprofit organizations selected this year to benefit are SamaraCare, Grow Wellness Foundation and Max’s Mission, which focus on mental health services; DuPagePads, Little Friends and Hesed House, which focus on community services; and 4:13 and 16 Days, which focus on youth and family services.

HIDDEN OAKS ART EXHIBIT RUNS THROUGH JULY

Contemporary artist Elizabeth Schnura will display her nature-themed exhibit, “Big Helpers: Mutualism Magnified,” through July 19 at Hidden Oaks Nature Center in Bolingbrook.

Schnura’s paintings highlight the symbiotic relationships between plants and animals, according to the Forest Preserve District of Will County.

Schnura, of Evergreen Park, creates detailed paintings based on photographs she takes, using vibrant color to depict insects, birds and other wildlife commonly found in local preserves and backyards, the forest district said in a news release.

Viewers can expect to see creatures from spiders to butterflies to grasshoppers hiding in the foliage, the release said. Mutualism describes the mutually beneficial relationship between two organisms and is a way to highlight the beauty and importance of all living things, Schnura said in the release.

The nature center at 419 Trout Farm Road is open from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Wednesdays through Sundays.
