Maine Township is holding a free residential document shredding event from 9 a.m. to noon. on May 16 in the parking lot at Maine Township Hall, 1700 Ballard Road in Park Ridge.

According to a news release, the event is open to Maine Township residents only and will continue until the shredding truck reaches capacity.

Residents may bring up to three plastic or paper grocery-type bags of paper for on-site, secure destruction, the release said. Staples are acceptable. Residents are asked to remove all paper clips, binder clips, and rubber bands before drop-off. Spiral notebooks and plastic-bound notebooks will not be accepted.

The event gives Maine Township residents a free, convenient way to dispose of sensitive paper records — old tax returns, bank statements, medical paperwork, expired insurance documents and the like — that should not go into standard recycling, the release said. With identity theft cases climbing nationally, on-site shredding remains one of the simplest steps a household can take to keep personal information out of the wrong hands.

Maine Township Supervisor Kimberly Jones encouraged residents to take advantage of the event:

“We fill the truck almost every year, and that tells you exactly how seriously our residents take protecting their information,” Jones said in the release. “Bringing the truck right to Township Hall on a Saturday morning provides a safe and convenient method for residents to shred their sensitive documents.”
