Gurnee police said they have arrested three juveniles who may be linked to a series of burglaries committed in recent weeks across Lake County.
Working as part of the task force, police noticed a car early on May 2 in Waukegan that had been reported stolen. Working with Waukegan police and several other police agencies, detectives arrested a 16-year-old and two 17-year-olds from Waukegan.
The vehicle, which was located in the 5400 block of Genessee Street, is believed to be connected to the recent break-ins.
Police agencies across the county formed a task force in an effort to identify the people responsible for the raft of break-ins, many at businesses.
Authorities say the investigation is active and ongoing, and the youths may face additional charges. Police are also working to see if other people are involved. More than 40 businesses have been burglary victims in recent weeks, police said.
“This case reflects the complexity of investigating a series of related incidents across multiple jurisdictions and the importance of strong collaboration among law enforcement partners,” Gurnee Police Chief Jeremy Gaughan said.
“While investigations like this often take time and may not always be visible to the public, our officers and detectives are working behind the scenes every day to protect our community,” he added. “We recognize the impact these crimes have had on our business owners, and we hope this development provides a measure of reassurance that those responsible are being identified and held accountable.”
New K-9
The Lake County Sheriff’s Office has added another police dog to its roster.
K-9 Brek began serving with the LCSO in April, with his handler, Corrections Officer Michael Mazurkiewicz. Brek is assigned to the county jail.
The police dog “will play an important role in keeping our jail safe, with a primary focus on detecting illegal drugs and other contraband in incoming property and housing areas. With the continued dangers posed by substances like fentanyl, this added capability helps protect both staff and those in our custody,” the Sheriff’s Office said.
First Responder Expo
People interested in police, fire and rescue work should circle May 16 on their calendars, when the annual First Responder Expo returns to Gurnee Mills mall.
This year’s edition will feature 45 police and fire departments who will be in parking lot E from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m.
The free event appeals to children and families who want to learn about police work and fire safety through displays and interactions with first responders.
