The three people who died Sunday in a wrong-way crash on Interstate 88 in the Aurora area have been identified, the Kane County Coroner’s Office said on Tuesday.
The crash happened in the early hours of Sunday morning, when a driver traveling eastbound in the westbound left lane of the interstate struck another vehicle head-on, officials have said. It occurred near mile marker 112 of I-88 in Sugar Grove, the Coroner’s Office said.
The driver that had been traveling eastbound and the two occupants of the other vehicle were pronounced dead at the scene.
The driver of the first vehicle has since been identified as Jonathan Rivera, 32, of Melrose Park, per the Coroner’s Office, and the two occupants of the other vehicle have been identified as Sariyah Watson, 21, of DeKalb, and Heaven Williams, 21, also of DeKalb.
The coroner and her deputies arrived at the scene of the crash and began the investigation into the cause and manner of death of the individuals, according to a news release from the Coroner’s Office.
On Monday, autopsies were performed, the Coroner’s Office said, with preliminary findings indicating that all three individuals had injuries consistent with a motor vehicle collision.
Toxicology samples were also collected to be analyzed at a national forensic laboratory, the Coroner’s Office said.
