Two separate traffic incidents on I-290, also known as the Eisenhower Expressway, left two people dead and at least 11 others injured Sunday morning, according to state police.
The first incident occurred at around 3:00 a.m. when Illinois State Police Troop 3 units responded to a four-car collision on westbound I-290 at Ashland Avenue.
State police said a preliminary investigation indicates that slow or stopped traffic led to a passenger vehicle striking the rear of another car, triggering a chain reaction.
Eight occupants were transported to local hospitals, where one person was pronounced dead and seven others were treated for injuries, police said.
Later that morning, at around 11:10 a.m., units responded to a second crash involving a two-car rollover on westbound I-290 at 25th Street. Five occupants were transported to local hospitals with injuries, one of whom was later pronounced dead, police said.
Traffic impacts were significant throughout the day. Following the early morning crash, the right lane and several ramps were shut down for the crash investigation. All lanes reopened at around 7:54 a.m.
After the 11:10 a.m. rollover, all westbound lanes were closed and traffic was diverted onto 17th Street.
Illinois State Police confirmed that investigations into both collisions remain active and ongoing.
