A Gary man is facing a murder charge after allegedly shooting a man who was in an argument with his girlfriend over selling her missing jacket, filings state.

Antwon Oliver, 21, is charged with murder and a gun enhancement in the June 9 death of Antwan Morris.

He is in custody, held without bond. If convicted, he faces up to 85 years.

Morris was shot in the arm and chest, as if he were trying to protect himself, an affidavit states.

Officers found a spent .300 rifle casing and a brown clothes bag at the scene.

Police wrote the woman pulled into a Gary apartment building on the 100 block of E. 5th Avenue, where Morris lived. She believed he had sold her jacket for at least $80 and went to take his clothes till she got it back. Her child, 4, was in the back seat.

Just then, Morris pulled up with two other people.

She and Morris argued and he allegedly “knocked” her out. Oliver got out of her vehicle and confronted him with a gun, records show. After the shooting, he ran off.

He later gave police different stories on how Morris got shot, saying at one point the gun “accidentally went off,” the affidavit states.

“Are they going to go easy on me since this is my first offense?” he later asked the police.

The two people with Morris said they saw him and the woman “tussling” before a shot.

A video showed Oliver and Morris “interact briefly” before Morris collapsed.

Morris was unarmed, police said.
