A Porter County Sheriff’s Department crash report has identified the victim of a fatal wreck Monday in Liberty Township as a Wheatfield woman and noted that the accident occurred because the other driver failed to yield.
Monica Guzman, 45, died at the scene of the two-vehicle crash, which occurred around 5:56 p.m. Monday at Ind. 49 and County Road 600 North, according to the report, released Wednesday.
Police have said that an initial investigation showed that a 2024 Tesla truck was traveling west on 600 N when it collided with a southbound 2017 Nissan passenger car. Guzman was driving the Nissan.
According to the crash report, the driver of the Tesla, a 42-year-old man from Algonquin, Illinois, told police he was westbound on 600 North crossing Ind. 49, and he believed a vehicle was in the median, partially obstructing his view.
As he began crossing Ind. 49, he told police, he struck the driver’s side of the Nissan with his front bumper. The Post-Tribune is not identifying the driver because he has not been charged with a crime.
Police said the driver of the Tesla failed to yield right of way to the Nissan as he crossed Ind. 49, and both vehicles landed in a ditch at the southwest corner of the intersection after the crash.
