A 10-year-old girl has died after a two-story apartment fire Monday night on the 2900 Block of Bernice Road in Lansing, fire officials said.

The child, identified by the Cook County medical examiner’s office as 10-year-old Braelyn Stewart of Dolton, was taken to Munster Community Hospital before being transferred to Comer Children’s Hospital in Chicago, where she was pronounced dead at 4:18 p.m. Tuesday.

The Lansing Fire Department responded at about 7:30 p.m. Monday, according to a department news release, finding heavy smoke and the girl trapped inside the building.

Firefighters, with the help of automatic aid companies, “made an aggressive search attempt under heavy fire conditions” and rescued the girl from the building, the news release states.

A Lansing police officer was treated for smoke inhalation and released Monday night.

Grady said the Lansing Fire Department was waiting Wednesday for an update on the Illinois State Fire Marshal’s investigation into the cause of the fire. No foul play is suspected.

The fire was brought under control within 30 minutes, according to the department, with assistance from Calumet City, South Holland, Thornton, Dolton, Glenwood, Lynwood, Hazel Crest, Flossmoor, Tinley Park, Munster, Indiana, Bud’s Ambulance Service and the state fire marshal.
