The Commuter Rail Service Board on Wednesday heard staff recommendations that the 99th Street station on the Rock Island rail line be closed but that Rock Island stations at 95th and 103d Streets and the Illinois Central Gulf station at 47th Street be kept open for at least a year. Pressure from community groups in late 1984 induced the rail board to keep all four stations open for six months if community groups would maintain and beautify them and if ridership reached at least 50 passengers a day. Though only the 95th Street station came close to that number, the groups` efforts warrant an extension of the trial period for at least another year, said James Cole, rail board executive director. The board is to vote on the issue Friday.
