Negotiators for The Tribune and one of three striking unions made progress on a key issue during bargaining Friday, but the company ”moved backward” on another major item, a union official said. The session with the printers` union featured movement by the newspaper toward the union position on the jurisdiction of printers, according to William Boarman, a vice president of the International Typographical Union. But the company increased, from 125 to 157, the number of printers` jobs it proposes to eliminate over two years. Boarman said the change ”is a move backward that could
unnecessarily delay settlement of the strike,” which began July 18. Boarman said the session ”ended on a pretty positive note.” New meetings will be scheduled next week with the printers as well as with the striking mailers`
and pressmen`s unions.
