That could well be the story of Thursday night`s neighborhood soccer brawl between Downers Grove South and Hinsdale South in Darien.
Downers South and Hinsdale South battled to a 1-1 tie in a struggle that lasted through four quarters of regulation play and two 5-minute overtimes.
As expected, it was a classic confrontation between two of the Chicago area`s top powers. Downers South (12-1-1) is ranked No. 4 in The Tribune`s statewide poll while Hinsdale South (10-1-2) is rated a step behind at No. 5. Hinsdale South drew first blood on Kenny Smith`s 14th goal of the season in the first minute of the opening quarter. John Mokarski tied it for the visitors with a goal on a throw-in from Mike Wiggins in the third quarter.
Goalie Mike Barclay turned back 16 shots for Downers South while his counterpart, Rolando Martinez, made 22 saves.
Forest View 2, Hoffman Estates 1–Gino Sciortino scored 2 goals, the last coming late in the fourth quarter to snap a 1-1 deadlock, as 11th-ranked Forest View (14-2, 8-1) earned a share of first place in the Mid-Suburban League South Division while handing No. 1-ranked Hoffman Estates (14-1, 8-1)
its first loss of the season. Ken Snow`s 27th goal of the season gave Hoffman the tie before Sciortino`s game-breaker.
Hinckley-Big Rock 6, Malta 1–Freshman John Thurow scored 4 goals to lead the Royals` (12-1-1). ”He (Thurow) has all the skills and more potential as Kevin Smith had when he (Smith) was an all-stater and scored 121 goals during his career here,” said Royals` coach Larry Peppers. Thurow has 19 goals.
Wheaton Christian 2, Batavia 1–Todd Beamer scored one goal and assisted on Dave Jacobsen`s game-winner with 11:11 gone in the fourth quarter as Wheaton (12-2) won the nonconference match. Batavia fell to 11-4.
Volleyball
Riverside-Brookfield d. Downers North–The Bulldogs (18-3), The Tribune`s 14th-ranked team, prevailed 15-10, 10-15, 15-3 in the nonconference match with seventh-ranked Downers North (15-4).
Lisle d. Minooka–The Lions (12-3, 6-0) opened the second half of the Northeast Conference schedule with the hard-earned 15-13, 16-14 struggle behind Carol Dickey (15-of-15, 2 kills).
Golf
Marmion Military 154, Waubonsie Valley 173–The Cadets (12-0) finished their dual-meet season undefeated for the second straight year with Tim Wood and Eric Konen sharing medalist honors with 1-over-par 38s at Country Lakes in Aurora. Teammates Chris Watts and Casey Mulligan added 39s.

Tilden 12, Phillips 2–The defending champion Blue Devils (5-1, 2-1)
climbed back into the Public League Central Section title race on Jerome Sellers` 9-yard run with a fumble recovery and Fred Howard`s 50-yard run. Phillips is 4-2, 2-1).
