The high-rises, mansions and townhouses of some of Chicago`s toniest blocks will be the focus of attention Saturday during a walking tour sponsored by the Chicago Historical Society. Three society docents will be on hand, each to lead a group of up to 20 history buffs on a Gold Coast tour that will concentrate primarily on Astor Street (pictured here) and Lake Shore Drive.
”We`ll explore the social history of the area,” explains Carole Krucoff, an associate educator at the society. ”And that doesn`t necessarily mean high society. We`re concerned with why the area developed the way it did and who lived there.” Walkers will meet at the society for an introduction to the Gold Coast of yesterday through photographs and displays of period furniture before starting out on the rain-or-shine walking tour.
Gold Coast Walking Tour; Chicago Historical Society, Clark Street and North Avenue; pre-registration required; 642-4600; 10:30 a.m.-noon Saturday;
$3 for society members, $4.50 for non-members.
