Jamie Moyer`s second straight start after sitting a turn would seem to indicate he has taken the lead over Jeff Pico and Mike Bielecki in the fifth- starter derby.

Not necessarily.

”I don`t know what I`m gonna do,” said manager Don Zimmer.

”I`ll put it this way: If Bielecki hadn`t got sick, he`d have been the starter the rest of the way out. Because he pitched, to me, three decent games as a starter. There`s no doubt about it, if he hadn`t have got sick, he would`ve pitched as a starter probably the rest of the season.”

Bielecki missed two weeks because of salmonella poisoning.

– Left-hander Pat Perry, trying to overcome lower back trouble, could be ready to pitch Tuesday, pitching coach Dick Pole said. Perry is with the club; Al Nipper is still in Chicago.

– Speaking of the bullpen: The best reliever eligible for free agency after this season is the Phillies` Steve Bedrosian, but everyone in Philadelphia is sure he`ll re-sign. Still a question: Mike Schmidt?

– For the record, Doug Dascenzo says he`s actually 5 feet 3/4 inches.

– Dallas Green, a familiar name, says he almost became manager of the Yankees last June, until Lou Piniella was resuscitated. Don`t count him out for next year.

Could Green work with George Steinbrenner?

”If that happens,” said Larry Bowa, now a coach for the Phils, ”I`d like to be a sportswriter in New York.”

”I`ve been around George in meetings,” Green told the Philadelphia Inquirer`s Frank Dolson. ”He`s a little like me-impetuous, not too tactful. Maybe we`d get along.”
