A collection of work by 15 African-American women opens this week in an exhibit called ”Divining: Sapphire and Crystal,” at Artemisia Gallery.
The exhibit was curated by Marva Lee Pitchford Jolly, professor of art at Chicago State University and founder of Mudpeoples Studio in Chicago. The show focuses on ”the affirmation of African-American women as artists,” Jolly said.
Artists whose work is on display are all from Chicago and include Joyce Owens, Felicia Grant Preston, Evelyn Davis Frazier, Lillian Morgan-Lewis, Patricia Bohannon, Renee Townsend, Rose Blouin, Dorothy Carter, Faith Davis, Annie Lee, Venus Blue, Arlene Turner and Joanne Scott.
An opening reception will be at 5 p.m. Friday at Artemisia, 700 N. Carpenter St.
Jolly will also lead a panel of artists who will discuss the role and definition of African-American women artists at 7 p.m. Feb. 25. at the gallery.
