Take a vegetable base, add poppy seeds and what do you have? Salad Bar soap, of course.

The soap, recycled from bits and pieces of other soaps, is just one of the ecologically-correct products sold at In Hot Water. , the natural pampering products store where everything from bath salts to body mists is clean-smelling, biodegradable and free of chemicals and animal byproducts.

Tim Carr, a sales executive in the cosmetics industry, recently opened the shop, which takes much of its inspiration from The Body Shop, the successful international chain. “They only sell their own products, while we seek out the best of many manufacturers.”

Carr also puts more emphasis on self-indulgence (Note the mannequin soaking in the tub in the window). “After the kids are asleep and the dishes are done, there is nothing better than a bubble bath,” he says. “And it all goes back to the Earth. People also feel good knowing that their soap is not being tested on defenseless animals.” (All Carr’s suppliers refrain from animal testing).

Some of the more popular products are heart-shaped terra-cotta potpourri , aromatherapy bath salts and a glycerine soap with a loofah inside. Prices range from $3 for bath cubes to $44 for 36 ounces of bath gel. In Hot Water is at 3330 N. Broadway. For information call 312-549-2639.
