The Village Board has approved spending $404,500 for community developments to benefit low and moderate income persons.

The U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development will fund $389,000 of the total amount, while the remaining $15,500 will come from water and sewer connection fees paid by residents of the Meadow Knolls West subdivision.

Nearly half the grant money will be used for programs providing housing assistance for the homeless, low-income and disabled persons.

The programs will be administered by two Arlington Heights-based organizations, the Resource Center for the Elderly and the Community and Economic Development Association of Northwest Cook County, in addition to Northwest Community Services in Elk Grove Village and Women In Need Growing Stronger in Park Ridge.

A handicapped ramp at The Barn and remodeling of restrooms in village-owned buildings to meet standards of the Americans with Disabilities Act will be done for $76,500. In addition, $65,000 will be used to buy or rehab a home for use as a group residence for disabled persons.

Of the total grant amount, $200,000 will be used to pay back part of a loan for adding storm sewers, parkway trees and sidewalks in the Meadow Knoll subdivision, an older residential area developed before the village incorporated that does not meet Schaumburg standards.

As a village with over 50,000 residents, Schaumburg automatically receives funds and anticipates receiving the money May 1, community development planner Paul Evans said.
