Some form of child-care assistance is offered by three of four employers, according to a recent survey of more than 1,000 major employers by Hewitt Associates, a Lincolnshire, Ill.-based benefits consulting firm. But only 9 percent of them have some sort of day-care facility arrangement for employees.

The most common form of child-care assistance offered by companies is sponsorship of flexible-spending accounts. (Employees can set aside up to $5,000 of their salary in these tax-exempt accounts and use the money to pay for child-care expenses.)

Nearly one in three employers offers child-care resource or referral services.
