A Cook County correctional officer was charged Tuesday with shooting another man during an early-morning traffic dispute in Evanston.

The suspect, Leonard Moore, 55, of 150 Callan Ave., Evanston, was charged with aggravated battery with a firearm, reckless discharge of a firearm, aggravated discharge of a firearm and aggravated battery on a public way.

Police said the victim, Ayinde Murphy, 21, of the 1200 block of West Chase Street in Chicago, was in good condition at St. Francis Hospital in Evanston with a back wound.

Evanston Police Cmdr. Dennis Nilsson said a resident reported he went to his window after hearing loud voices and saw Murphy outside his vehicle yelling at Moore, who was sitting in a vehicle at Brummel and Custer Streets.

The witness told investigators he turned away from the window and heard a shot. He said that when he looked back, he saw Murphy lying on the ground.

Bill Cunningham, a spokesman for the sheriff’s department, said Moore has been on unpaid medical leave for four years.
