An all-day kindergarten day-care program in Elementary School District 62 was eliminated for next year because officials said it was too costly to run and was raising legal issues.

The board last week voted instead to provide kindergarten enrichment activities through an after-school day-care program. While officials agree this program isn’t as academically enriched as an all-day kindergarten program could be, it is the most financially feasible for the district.

District 62 officials said they couldn’t legally charge parents almost $1,000 a child per year to participate because they ran a public institution charged with providing free education.
