A substantial part of the men’s winter 1998/99 collection of Italian fashion house Basile was stolen from a truck in Milan just hours before it was due to appear in a presentation Tuesday morning.

The Treviso-based company said about 60 garments from the collection were stolen from outside its Milan showroom on fashionable Via Montenapoleone Monday afternoon while the truck driver went to find someone to help him unload.

The show went ahead with some last-minute substitutions, a Basile spokeswoman said.

“It seems incredible,” she told the Italian agency Ansa. “It was only 5 p.m. The street was full of people, but no one noticed anything.”

The company did not give a value for the theft. The garments taken were made from original patterns and unique fabrics.

“The value of the loss — and we’re not talking about the commercial value — is incalculable,” the spokeswoman said.
