Glen Ellyn trustees voted late Monday night to approve an ordinance that would bar building permits for projects not yet in process involving buildings taller than 35 feet.

The ordinance directs the village’s Plan Commission to consider a moratorium on zoning applications for projects more than 35 feet in height.

The action resulted from concerns about future buildings of five stories tall and built right up to the sidewalk in the central business district.

“It’s an issue of bulk, the interplay between height and setback,” Gary Webster, the village administrator, said at a December board workshop meeting.

One project currently under consideration is a five-story complex with 40 dwelling units and 2,200 square feet of retail space.

Trustees agreed to hire Planning Resources Inc., a Wheaton consulting firm, to conduct a comprehensive review of zoning code provisions in Glen Ellyn’s central business district.
