Cook County Republicans opened their new headquarters in the Loop on Friday, and their candidate for sheriff opened his attack on Democratic incumbent Michael Sheahan over his recent salary increase.

Challenger LeRoy Martin charged that Sheahan should not have pursued the pay increase, which the Cook County Board approved earlier this week. Martin characterized as “outrageous” the raise the board approved for Sheahan, which boosts the sheriff’s salary next year to $131,745 from $112,000.

Martin said, if elected, he would donate the raise amount to a substance-abuse and treatment facility or to charity.

Sheahan spokesman Bill Cunningham noted that all but one Republican on the board supported Sheahan’s raise.
