OTHER PEOPLE’S DIRT
By Louise Rafkin
Algonquin, 224 pages, $15.95
Calling herself a “somewhat hip and creative version of Amelia Bedelia,” author Louise Rafkin abandoned academia eight years ago in favor of cleaning houses in such tony locales as Cape Cod and the French Riviera. Little escapes Rafkin’s rubber glove or shrewd eye. During a stint with an exploitative service, she cleans a scholar’s West Coast high-rise and is chagrined to find a book on his shelf about the “horrid history and present-day working conditions of American maids.”
