A Bosnian Croat paramilitary commander stood by as one of his men repeatedly raped a Muslim woman, prosecutors claimed Monday at the start of the commander’s war crimes trial in The Hague, Netherlands.
Anto Furundzija, 28, is accused of two war crimes stemming from the May 1993 rape. Furundzija denies being present while the woman was raped during interrogation.
His trial is the first war crimes case to deal specifically with sexual assault.
The alleged rapist has been indicted but not arrested. Officials have not released his name.
Furundzija was arrested in December in the central Bosnian town of Vitez.
Prosecutors say that the victim was raped at the headquarters of his unit just outside Vitez. The trial is the tribunal’s sixth.
