Aren’t there enough hours in your day? Well, it’s your time of year then, because the summer solstice is approaching, when days are longest and, coincidentally, when the season of summer formally begins. It’s also an excuse for a party, this one a 24-hour affair at the Museum of Contemporary Art.

The museum holds its third annual Summer Solstice Celebration, a round-the-clock festival of art, music, dance, performances and hands-on activities for all ages.

Activities take over the entire museum during the event, which includes: the music of the Robert Cornelius Seven, Mambo Express, Chicago Samba School, and others; and “creation stations” where children and families can make kites, musical instruments and hats. All the museum’s galleries are open during the event.

The longest day of the year is Sunday, June 21, and the solstice itself occurs that day at 9:03 a.m. Central Daylight Time, when the sun is the highest in the sky in the Northern Hemisphere.
