The board of the Homer Township Fire Protection District voted Tuesday to revise its ordinance requiring sprinkler systems in all new homes.

The revised ordinance will require only a sprinkler head to be in the furnace areas of newly constructed homes.

The change in the ordinance came after builders, developers and township officials complained that a full sprinkler system would add $5,000 to $10,000 to the cost of new homes. It is estimated that the cost of a single sprinkler head would be about $50.

The revised ordinance also will require that builders provide homebuyers with written documents informing them of the option of adding a sprinkler system at their own cost.
