A Cook County Circuit Court jury on Friday convicted a West Side man of involuntary manslaughter charges in the fatal shooting of a 3-year-old boy.
Edwin Orta, 26, of the 1200 block of North Artesian Avenue, appeared before Judge Michael Toomin, where the jury verdict was announced in the December 1997 killing of German Morales.
Prosecutors said Orta had been flashing gang signs at rival gang members sitting in a car in the 2600 block of West Potomac Avenue.
Prosecutors said Orta got a gun and fired six shots at the gang members and struck German as he and his 11-year-old sister played.
Orta is scheduled to be sentenced on April 12. Involuntary manslaughter carries a sentence of 4 to 15 years but the sentence could also be probation.
