A Kane County Circuit Court judge on Friday reversed a ruling by the South Elgin Electoral Board and put Trustee James Hansen’s name back on the April 13 ballot.
Don Hauserman, husband of Trustee Heidi Hauserman, one of Hansen’s opponents in the coming election, had challenged Hansen’s nominating petitions after discovering that a notary who verified the names on one page was listed as a supporter on the same page.
After the three-member Electoral Board agreed with Hauserman, Hansen’s name was struck from the ballot last month because he failed to get the 117 names needed. Hansen appealed the ruling.
When reached Friday evening, Heidi Hauserman said she welcomes Hansen back on the ballot.
“We had our interpretation of what the law was, and obviously it wasn’t what we thought,” she said.
Hansen contends that his opponent got what she wanted.
“They drained my campaign fund,” he said, adding that he spent $1,800 to get the matter resolved. “They had to know right off that this wasn’t going to work. I think they were counting on me to not fight it.”
