Rod Strickland scored 15 of his 25 points in the fourth quarter, including four from the free throw line in the final 1:10, as Washington broke a five-game home losing streak.
Strickland, who also had 15 assists, went 15 for 16 from the line. Juwan Howard had 26 points and 11 rebounds for the Wizards.
J.R. Reid had 20 points for Charlotte. The Hornets are 1-7 on the road.
