It wasn’t pretty, but the Wolves’ 4-1 win over Milwaukee on Friday at the Horizon was timely.

The Wolves opened their first-place lead in the IHL’s Midwest Division to three points over the Manitoba Moose. They also moved three points ahead of Manitoba and Long Beach in the race for second place in the Western Conference and an opening playoff-round bye.

“It was solid compared to what we’ve had the last couple of weeks,” said coach John Anderson, whose team is 2-3-2 in its last seven games.

Steve Maltais scored goals 2 minutes and 27 seconds apart in the second period. Kevin Miller and Tim Bergland also scored for the Wolves, who got a 32-save effort from Wendell Young.
