Rico Bell & The Snake Handlers

Dark Side Of The Mersey (Bloodshot)

Dr. Jekyll/Mr. Hyde isn’t the only Englishman with a split identity. By day Eric Bellis is a successful painter whose canvases juxtapose his homeland’s remembered rural past and overbuilt urban present. But come nightfall his honky-tonking alter-ego Rico Bell, who has been a member of the Mekons for more than a dozen years, straps on an accordion and sings his heart out in smoky pubs. On his second solo album Bell adopts the persona of a lovelorn, socially conscious barfly, crooning tales of romantic and economic despair over his backing band’s anthemic pub rock.
