At least the world’s top-ranked player pocketed $425,000 to sweeten his 6-0, 6-7 (2-7), 6-4 loss to Tommy Haas at Munich, Germany.
In the women’s quarterfinals, defending champion Venus Williams beat Barbara Schett 6-3, 6-4 to set up a semifinal showdown with No. 1 Martina Hingis, while No. 2 Lindsay Davenport beat Mary Pierce 3-6, 6-2, 6-4.
In another men’s quarterfinal, Thomas Enqvist beat Nicolas Lapentti 6-3, 6-2. Enqvist had a bye into the quarterfinals by virtue of his runner-up finish at the Australian Open.
– Top-seeded Tim Henman, who passed up the Grand Slam Cup to play in the Toulouse (France) Open, was ousted in the second round by Nicolas, Escude 6-4, 6-2.
