The Salvation Army is seeking volunteers to help ring in the holidays.
The traditional red kettles and bell ringers will appear at storefronts in McHenry County starting Friday, but army officials say they need more people to work the kettles if they are going to reach their goal of $95,000 this year.
“We have 24 stores, and we’re out there six days a week, 12 hours a day,” said Jennifer Arens, community director for the Salvation Army’s youth ministries. “Most volunteers do two hours at a time, so that gives you an idea of how much help we need.”
Arens said ringers are needed for day and after-work hours during the week. Saturday slots are near full, but some openings remain.
The Salvation Army prefers volunteers to be at least 16 years old and welcomes those who add creativity to the task. Some volunteers sing, and others, like Arens, play instruments.
Many children accompany their parents. The kids, particularly the younger ones, actually help increase the collections, Arens said.
“The younger the kids, the more money,” Arens said. “We just hope our volunteers, whether they sing or are just friendly, will spread that holiday cheer.”
Ringers pick up their bell, bucket and apron at the Salvation Army headquarters at 290 W. Crystal Lake Ave., Crystal Lake, before heading out to their assigned locations. Volunteers should call 815-455-2769.
Last year, McHenry County ringers helped bring in just less than $90,000 for the Salvation Army.
